Baby Stuff Part 2: Things I Don't Love as Much

Time for Part 2.....

We bought/registered for/borrowed a few things that I thought we would really need with an infant, that I don't love as much as I thought I would, or that Annabelle doesn't like, or that we just don't use. Here goes...

Things I Don't Love as Much:
1. The swing. I'm soooo glad we didn't buy a swing, and that no one bought the one on our registry. We ended up borrowing one from my friend Amy (Thanks Amy!!), which helped both of us--got it out of her baby-stuff-graveyard in the basement, and saved us $150. Well, Annabelle doesn't like it. I've heard of babies who love the swing so much they have to be weaned off of sleeping in it, but that is not my daughter. She will sit in it for about 3 minutes and then start crying. I've tried all of the different settings, and swinging both sideways and front to back, but she doesn't care. It's just not her cup of tea!

2. The bathtub. We got a great one, and did use the accessories that came with it the first 6 weeks (a foam mat and a sling to put in the sink). It was fine for when she was super tiny and we were scared to death of dropping her. We used the actual baby bath tub for a few baths, but it was awkward to bend over the tub, and just didn't seem super necessary. We use it every now and then, but mostly now I just get in the regular tub with her and support her while she floats and kicks. It's easier, more fun, and good skin-to-skin bonding time. I'm sure we will still use it every now and then, but if you are tight on budget, I would say it's not a requirement. The sink and regular tub would suffice.

3. Seven Sling. I got one of these slings because they always have promo codes floating around for a free sling, only pay shipping. wahoo! I thought it would be great. I don't know if I got the wrong size (I don't think so, according to their website), but Annabelle doesn't fit. Even when she was a newborn it was hard to get her in it, and it looked uncomfortable and cramped. Definitely not on my list of things to try again.

4. Stroller. We got the Graco SnugRide Infant Car Seat Frame Stroller, because I didn't want a huge "travel system," and those strollers got bad reviews for the most part anyway. Since Annabelle doesn't like her car seat, that automatically means she also does not like the stroller, since she has to sit in her car seat to be in the stroller. Obviously most people love their strollers and so do their babies, but me and mine do not. If we go into a store I wear her in a carrier, and if we're on a walk, I wear her in a carrier. I've used the stroller a whopping 3 times in 2 months. It's unfortunate, because it really is a great stroller. Super easy to use and collapse. Oh well. Looking forward to getting a jogging stroller next spring--hopefully she'll like that more since she'll be bigger/older/won't need to sit in her car seat.

5. Huggies Pure and Natural diapers. We bought these diapers for her first two weeks of life (meconium + cloth diapers = yuck), and also bought them to have on hand for when cloth diapers wouldn't be as convenient (ie. going to Michigan). Unfortunately, these diapers STINK! pun intended. When she was little, I figured the leaking was just because she was so little. But when we went to Michigan, she had more blow-outs and leaks than ever. It was gross and annoying, especially being out and about the whole time. A friend that was with me suggested we use Pampers instead, so I'm going to probably donate  the rest of these diapers (I think I have like 100 of them left, bummer) and get some Pampers or some other brand. I just really wanted some that would be safer for her little bum, not full of chemicals and bleach and stuff...we'll see what we can find that works better. Needless to say though, these diapers do NOT have my recommendation.

6. Any and all pacifiers. Annabelle doesn't like them, so they were a waste of money. And, a lot of money at that. We literally ended up buying every single kind that Target has. I'm not joking. She doesn't like any of them. I hope they work for your kids, I really do! But for us, they were a waste. Had I known, I would have just stuck with the free one from the hospital. (or really, it probably cost $50, but whatever).

That's pretty much all for now. I tried to think ahead and not buy stuff I knew would probably be a waste, and I think overall we did a pretty good job. But, I'm sure there will be more stuff I come across and wonder why the heck I bought it in the first place.

Good luck to you and your registering! :)

I loved these lists! Isn't it funny how all babies are so different and have likes/dislikes? Who would have thought? ;) Ditto on the baby bathtub. Madelynn hated that thing so we would just bathe with her instead. It's fun! When she could sit up by herself she started bathing alone. :) Hold on to the seven sling though. I agree they are awkward with little babies but when Madelynn was around 10 months (and 20+ pounds) she went through a clingy phase and that thing saved me! She had grown out of wanting to be in other carriers but would sit on my hip with that one.
